Extensive scientific research indicates that when sufficient numbers of people practice the TM program, a significant, positive effect gets created and the effect is measurable in society. The effect is based on the hypothesis that we are all connected via a field of collective consciousness. Therefore, the collective consciousness, which affects the whole of society, can be influenced by the individual.

What is collective consciousness? The individual influences society and society influences the individual. These mechanics of collective consciousness are explained by Maharishi with an analogy: the mind and body of society are a combination of the qualities of consciousness of every individual. When mind and body are not coordinated, problems arise.
