Live Event: The Taste of Utopia, 1983: When Meditation Changed the World
Tue, November 4 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EST
With TM Teacher John Cowhig and Special Guest Dr. Craig Pearson
In 1983, the square root of one percent (√(1%) of the world’s population was 7,000. At that time, an assembly of 7,000 people practicing TM and the TM Sidhi program together would theoretically create a peacekeeping effect felt around the world.
The historic Taste of Utopia Assembly, held December 17, 1983, to January 7, 1984 at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, attracted more than 8,000 people from 46 countries. It was the first of a series of large peace-creating assemblies MIU held in the 1980s.
Indeed, a wave of harmony and goodwill swept the globe during those three weeks. World stock markets, many of which had been trending downward for the previous year, soared upward in concert, many setting all-time records, often repeatedly. International conflict declined and heads of state became more positive and constructive. In the US and worldwide, crime rates dropped, infectious disease rates dropped, and highway and air traffic fatalities dropped.
At the end of the three weeks, when the group disbursed, everything quickly reverted to its previous state.
“It was as if a light had been switched on for three weeks and then switched off again,” MIU President Hagelin said.
In the ten years after the Taste of Utopia course and the World Peace Assemblies that followed it, many things lightened up in the world. The Berlin Wall fell, the Cold War ended, and South African apartheid collapsed.
That’s the kind of change we want now, and the reason for the large assemblies we are creating in India, Nepal, Mexico, and elsewhere.
Our special guest, Dr. Craig Pearson, is deeply immersed in this work and has been the leader of the twice-yearly two-week World Peace Assemblies at MIU for the past several years. He is a distinguished scholar and PhD in Maharishi Vedic Science and Vice President of Growth of Consciousness at MIU. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President of MIU for 18 years and held a variety of leadership positions before that.
Dr. Pearson has many talents. He is the author of two profound books, The Supreme Awakening: Experience of Higher States of Consciousness Throughout Time — and How You Can Cultivate Them and The Complete Book of Yogic Flying. He has also published delightful humor books about people and animals, made videos of anagrams, and as an accomplished musician, curated a collection of songs.
Begins with a 20-minute group TM.
