With TM Teacher Lynne Hea.

Extensive scientific research indicates that when sufficient numbers of people practice the TM program, a significant, positive effect gets created and the effect is measurable in society. The effect is based on the hypothesis that we are all connected via a field of collective consciousness. Therefore, the collective consciousness, which affects the whole of society, can be influenced by the individual.

Research shows that when one percent of a given population area practices TM on their own, the trends of life in that area, such as the crime rate, measurably improve. Named The Maharishi Effect, this was first documented in a scientific experiment in 1974. Later research showed that this same kind of positive effect on society could be created by an even smaller number of people—the square root of one percent—when they practice the TM and TM-Sidhi program together in a group.

The Maharishi Effect was first documented on a global scale in 1984, with the assembly of a group of over 7000 people for three weeks at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa. Although the scientific community struggles to understand the mechanism for the Maharishi Effect, they acknowledge the validity of the scientific methodology used to demonstrate it, and so many scientific studies on this phenomenon have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
