Negative emotions, such as fear, anger, hatred, jealousy, depression, and so on hurt our lives and hinder our progress.

In an enlightening audio tape from the Paradise Tahoe Course in 1968, Maharishi gives us a profound insight: even though negative emotions — he uses the example of fear — seem to come from the mind, the mind is closely linked to the nervous system. Somewhere in the body, something starts to function abnormally, and this triggers corresponding disruptions in the mind.

Moods are hardware and software working in concert: fear, for example, is a negative sensation and a negative thought woven together.

In this tape, Maharishi gives us a simple strategy: direct attention to the physical sensations associated with the negative emotion and you will bring more life energy to that part of the body. This will help restore normal functioning quickly and thoroughly.

When Maharishi explained this procedure at the Queen’s University course in 1972, he pointed out that even if someone doesn’t meditate, just understanding they can address challenging moods through the body — no need to sort out the mental storm — will be a great relief to the person.
